The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band drum corps won the World Pipe Band Championship top drumming prize on Saturday, August 13. Led by Lead Drummer Reid Maxwell, the corps was awarded the Cup and Drummer’s Sash for finishing first. It was Maxwell’s sixth championship win, including five times with Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and once with the 78th Fraser Highlanders.

The winning drum corps includes BCPA director and treasurer Cameron Reid. The SFU Pipe Band placed sixth overall in the elite grade one band competition, with Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band of Northern Ireland taking the RSPBA Jubilee Trophy and Pipe Major’s banner, followed by Inveraray & District (2nd) and Scottish Power (3rd). BCPA adjudicator James Beaumont is a member of Field Marshall Montgomery PB. Scottish Power PB included band members Dave and Shaunna Hilder of Port Coquitlam. The band won the Friday MSR competition in what Dave Hilder says was the “most challenging conditions ever on a two-day World Pipe Band Championships”.

(This updated article corrects a previous version that referred to Maxwell’s win as a record. In fact, the record for world titles as leading drummer is held by Jim Kilpatrick MBE, who won 17 titles; 16 with Shots & Dykehead Caledonia and once with Polkemmet Grorud.)
