Feb 10, 2001 - BCPA Knock Out Round 2
This was a very enjoyable evening - the Knock Outs always seem to be
that. I used to think that Knock-Out was only a reference to the evening's competition - half (or so) of the field would get Knocked Out - and the other half (or so) would continue on. Well, I'm now thinking the KO also applies to contestants before the actual competition. Seven pipers advanced from the first KO round held last December, and only 5 answered the bell for round 2. A broken wrist, and other problems, kept the out of town (Alberta Boys) away, so Jori, Alan, Colin, Andrew, and Alison 'fought' it out for the 4 spots in the final, to be held in March. And the pipers advancing are: Eight drummers were entered in their first round, and seven competed for the 3 spots in
the final. The drummers advancing are: Hope to see you at the Annual Dinner next month, it should be a great event.

Feb 10, 2001 - BCPA Mini - Gathering #4
Our winter 2000 - 2001 Mini Gathering season is now complete. The
individual event awards have been presented, and only the winter aggregates awards
remain. (The Mini Gathering Aggregate Awards results will be posted here, a little later today (Sunday, Feb 11) - Imagine, the first announcement (? - posting? humm...) will be here on the results site!.) For the final event of the season there were a total of 92 pipers and 27 drummers competing in solo events. Once again a Piobaireachd class (Grade one this day) started at 11:00 AM. As always, the remaining events started at 1:00, and were completed by about 3:30. I guess you can tell that this still amazes me - a lot of work, a lot of help, and it goes so smoothly (considering what could happen). (But there is never a boring moment).
And the answer is... later - the most popular questions this day: 1) When will we know the Mini Aggregate results? 2) When do we get the momento for attending all the mini gathering? 3) Do you mind if I ask you a question? (sorry - just having fun)
Here is just one example of the many informative and excellent signs provided, throughout the school. Len does these, and much (much) more. While competition starts at 1:00 and ends at 3:00, I believe Len's tasks start (on the 'day of' tasks I mean - he does lots more for the contests) at around 9:00AM, and go to about 4:00. It is easier to clean up than set up I think, and he has more help for clean up too. OK, I think I am all out of words.. here are the results: |

January 13, 2001 - BCPA Mini-Gathering #3
The third BCPA Mini-Gathering of the 2000 - 2001 Piping Season is now
complete, and it seems quite a few competitors might have neglected their solo practise
over the Winter holidays - many who entered did not compete. (Entries for the Mini must be
sent at least 15 days before the event, and most enter the month prior, or even earlier).
Plans for practise, not realized? Perhaps. Historically, the first Mini after the
Christmas holidays has a lower than typical number of actual competitors, and this year's
event was no exception. This is not to suggest the turn out was poor, or disappointing: a
total of 115 players competed.
In the photo above, Beginner / Chanter class judge Angus Macpherson is listening to a 6/8 march played by one of the many young competitors in the class. This photo was taken through the glass on the class room's door, and here you can see the classic Mini-Gathering competition environment - the judge sits at the teacher's desk, the competitor fairly close. What you can't see are the parents, siblings, friends and fellow competitors, most in the hallways, but a few in the classrooms too.
As is often required, (with a completion target of 3:00 to 3:30PM) the Piobaireachd competition (a full Piobaireachd with 13 entered) for the Grade 2 class started earlier than the 1:00 general start time. Yes indeed, with the exception of G2 Piobaireachd, solos started at 1:00PM, and all results (Piob. too), awards, and announcements were completed by 3:30. As you can imagine, lots of work from A LOT of volunteers, stewards, judges and parents keep this event running so well, and so smoothly. OK - that is just about enough words from me.. except - it was another great day, well run, excellent facilities, and I want to again thank all the people that help make these events happen. And, last words (honest) - This is a reporting / web style for the Minis.. I am presenting the previous results too because I think they are interesting.. How are the competitors doing, each month? (Other than our own kids, whom should we watch?) |

Dec 9, 2000 - BCPA Mini-Gathering #2
Another excellent competition afternoon in Port Coquitlam. The
second BCPA Mini-Gathering of the season enjoyed an even larger group of
competitors, but once again the events ran smoothly, and efficiently. (Lots of hard
work, from dozens of volunteers) The school's doors opened around 12:00 noon, the
competition started at 1:00, and all of the events and awards presentations were
completed by about 3:30 - most impressive (again).
There are tuning rooms for the competitors, and the events take place in
class rooms, but many spectators choose to stand outside the class room doors, or in the
hallways. This scene (to the left) is common. Here the Beginner (on chanter) class is held in the classroom while parents, friends and many other competitors wait in the hallway. Enough words - on the the results: |

November 4, 2000 - BCPA Mini Gathering #1
Port Coquitlam - Pitt River Secondary School: With the help of dozens of volunteers, the BCPA 2000 / 2001 Piping Season has begun. This was the first competition for many players in their newly assigned grades, we have many new faces, many new competition classes, but the same old excellent event - Many thanks to all the helpers.
To the right you can see three of the tireless workers that are always behind the scenes (or somewhere nearby) in BCPA events (from the left: Mary MacKinnon's back, Bill Meston (part of his face at any rate), and Rob MacNeil). They are answering questions at the BCPA membership table - where they have a portable computer and printer, forms, briefcase, ... a mobile office of sorts..
At least 9 simultaneous events take place, and each group has their own tuning area (the halls, gym, and cafeteria are NOT used for tuning). So much can be packed into so little time, when this well organised.
Results are announced, certificates are given to each of the winners, and judging sheets are handed out. I hope you can see the very young and very small people in the photo. This is quite typical. Competitors range in age from about 7 (?) to 60 (?). But, I would guess the vast majority of competitors are in the 10-16 year old range. Lots of fun to see. OK.. Now, to the results: |
