Feb 10, 2001 - BCPA Knock Out Round 2

This was a very enjoyable evening - the Knock Outs always seem to be that.

I used to think  that Knock-Out was only a reference to the evening's competition - half (or so) of the field would get Knocked Out - and the other half (or so) would continue on. Well, I'm now thinking the KO also applies to contestants before the actual  competition.  Seven pipers advanced from the first KO round held last December, and only 5 answered the bell for round 2. A broken wrist, and other problems, kept the out of town (Alberta Boys) away, so Jori, Alan, Colin, Andrew, and Alison 'fought' it out for the 4 spots in the final, to be held in March.

And the pipers advancing are:
Jori Chisholm, Alan Bevan, Colin Gemmell, and Andrew Bonar.

Eight drummers were entered in their first round, and seven competed for the 3 spots in the final.  The drummers advancing are:
Aaran Campbell, Kristen Coulson, and Andre Tessier.

Hope to see you at the Annual Dinner next month, it should be a great event.

Feb 10, 2001 - BCPA Mini - Gathering #4

Our winter 2000 - 2001 Mini Gathering season is now complete. The individual event awards have  been presented, and only the winter aggregates awards remain.

(The Mini Gathering Aggregate Awards  results will be posted here, a little later today (Sunday, Feb 11) - Imagine, the first announcement (? - posting? humm...) will be here on the results site!.)

For the final event of the season there were a total of  92 pipers and 27 drummers competing in  solo events.  Once again a Piobaireachd class (Grade one this day) started at 11:00 AM.  As always, the remaining events started at 1:00, and were completed by about 3:30.  I guess you can tell that this still amazes me - a lot of work, a lot of help, and it goes so smoothly (considering what could happen). (But there is never a boring moment).

Preceding this final Mini Gathering, the BCPA held a Judging Ensemble workshop, with most of the judges from our association in attendance.  This was a new idea, and the goal was to discuss issues, share ideas and experiences. I'm told it went very well. Your humble reporter was momentarily frightened, to walk into a room, and see a group with this much knowledge of piping, drumming, and pipe bands.. Whew..(I'm not worthy)

bcpamg406.jpg (9431 bytes)In this photo, the event winners' award certificates are being handed out.  Somehow, at just the right time, a large crowd (about 10 deep in the photo) gathers in the school's cafeteria, where they  hear the results, see the awards presentation, and have a chance to pickup their judging sheets, and ask questions.

And the answer is... later - the most popular questions this day: 1) When will we know the Mini Aggregate results? 2) When do we get the momento for attending all the mini gathering? 3) Do you mind if I ask you a question? (sorry - just having fun)

And finally: Many thanks to Mini-Gathering coordinator, and all 'round hard working guy, Len Leroux.  These events would not happen without Len's efforts.

Here is just one example of the many informative and excellent signs provided, throughout the school. Len does these, and much (much) more.

While competition starts at 1:00 and ends at 3:00, I believe Len's tasks start (on the 'day of'  tasks I mean - he does lots more for the contests) at around 9:00AM, and go to about  4:00. It is easier to clean up than set up I think, and he has more help for clean up too.

OK, I think I am all out of words.. here are the results:

Back to Western Piping News and Results

January 13, 2001 - BCPA Mini-Gathering #3

The third BCPA Mini-Gathering of the 2000 - 2001 Piping Season is now complete, and it seems quite a few competitors might have neglected their solo practise over the Winter holidays - many who entered did not compete. (Entries for the Mini must be sent at least 15 days before the event, and most enter the month prior, or even earlier). Plans for practise, not realized? Perhaps. Historically, the first Mini after the Christmas holidays has a lower than typical number of actual competitors, and this year's event was no exception. This is not to suggest the turn out was poor, or disappointing: a total of 115 players competed.

It is generally thought that most competitors will use the winter Mini-Gatherings as a time to learn and 'perfect' their new competition tunes, and in fact this is a significant piece of the planning for the Minis;  with just one event  held each month, the entire season's new competition sets will be covered by the end of the Winter series. The one event per month also allows for a very short competition day, allowing other (non-piping) things to be done on a piping/drumming competition day - Imagine that!

In the photo above, Beginner / Chanter class judge Angus Macpherson is listening to a 6/8 march played by one of the many young competitors in the class.  This photo was taken through the glass on the class room's door, and here you can see the classic Mini-Gathering competition environment - the judge sits at the teacher's desk, the competitor fairly close. What you can't see are the parents,  siblings,  friends and fellow competitors, most in the hallways, but a few in the classrooms too.

There are Adult players too, although a significant minority (just 7 of 115 this day). They get their own warm up / tune up room, and their own competition class - to keep them away from the kids( to protect the Adults I mean.) Here 6 of the 7 Adult competitors this day try out their excuses on each other.... "Well, I cuddaaa..."  I think perhaps only Ken MacKenzie (his is the rightmost back) didn't need his excuse this day (he won).

In the photo to the right, one of my favourite photo subjects - tuning 'rooms': The January scene in the school's library - 6 pipers visible in this photo, warm and tune(?) up.

As is often required, (with a completion target of 3:00 to 3:30PM) the Piobaireachd competition (a full Piobaireachd with 13 entered)  for the Grade 2 class started earlier than the 1:00 general start time.  Yes indeed, with the exception of G2 Piobaireachd, solos started at 1:00PM, and all results (Piob. too), awards, and announcements were completed by 3:30.  As you can imagine,  lots of work from A LOT of volunteers, stewards, judges and parents keep this event running so well, and so smoothly.

OK - that is just about enough words from me.. except - it was another great day, well run, excellent facilities, and I want to again thank all the people that help make these events happen.

And, last words (honest) - This is a reporting / web style for the Minis.. I am presenting the previous results too because I think they are interesting.. How are the competitors doing, each month?   (Other than our own   kids, whom should we watch?)

Dec 9, 2000 - BCPA Mini-Gathering #2

Another excellent competition afternoon in Port Coquitlam.  The second BCPA  Mini-Gathering of the season enjoyed an even larger group of competitors, but once again the events ran smoothly, and efficiently.  (Lots of hard work, from dozens of volunteers) The school's doors opened around 12:00 noon, the competition started at  1:00, and all of the events and awards presentations were completed by about 3:30 - most impressive (again).

dec93.jpg (13007 bytes) Tartantown is the sponsor of the Mini-Gatherings, and at each competition the  attendees can count on Terry Lee and helpers from his staff (David Hicks this day) to setup the Tartantown piping and drumming supplies tables.  It certainly seems there is considerable support from the competitors and their families for the Tartantown effort.  The photo to the left is a common site, many people looking at supplies, at the Tartantown 'booth' (actually the gymnasium of the school).

dec91.jpg (9597 bytes)A treat at these events is the fact that competitors come in all sizes, ages and shapes, from the young and small, as you can see from the photo to the right (Laura Vivian - a competitor in the Grade 5 class),  to .... older and larger ....    (am I in trouble now?)

There are tuning rooms for the competitors,  and the events  take place in class rooms, but many spectators choose to stand outside the class room doors, or in the hallways.dec92.jpg (7656 bytes)

This scene (to the left) is common.  Here  the Beginner (on chanter) class is held in the classroom while parents, friends and many other competitors wait in the hallway.

Enough words - on the the results:

November 4, 2000 - BCPA Mini Gathering #1

Port Coquitlam - Pitt River Secondary School:

With the help of dozens of volunteers,  the BCPA  2000 / 2001 Piping Season has begun.   This was the first competition for many players in their newly assigned grades, we have many new faces, many new competition classes, but the same old excellent event - Many thanks to all the helpers.

bcpamg17.jpg (15177 bytes)A total of 148 players had pre-registered;  the doors opened at 12:00, the competition day began at 1:00 PM,  by 3:30 all events and the awards were complete.  (I think this is very impressive)

To the right you can see three of the tireless workers that are always behind the scenes (or somewhere nearby)  in BCPA events (from the left: Mary MacKinnon's back, Bill Meston (part of his face at any rate), and Rob MacNeil).  They are answering questions at the BCPA membership table - where they have a portable computer and printer, forms, briefcase, ... a mobile office of sorts..

bcpamg15.jpg (7993 bytes)The mini-gatherings are an action packed few hours, with the Pitt River Secondary School completely under the control (for lack of a better phrase) of masses of pipers, drummers, stewards, judges, parents, family, friends, and other spectators (I'm trying to say "There were a lot of people here"). But as in the past, everything worked. Here (photo to the left) is the library, with four or five pipers sort of visible in the photo, and (as I recall) at least four others also playing, but not in the photo.  Can you imagine tuning drones in a library, and not being able to hear the drones?

image02.jpg (4222 bytes)This is fairly widely spread out school, so at each intersection of halls or stairs, there were direction signs. Here (in the photo to the left) you can see pointers for the upstairs events, and events that were straight ahead. There was also an event taking place to the right.

At least 9 simultaneous events take place, and each group has their own tuning area (the halls, gym, and cafeteria are NOT used for tuning). So much can be packed into so little time, when this well organised.

bcpamg1a.jpg (9976 bytes)At then end of the mini-day, around 3:00, competitors, and others, gather in the cafeteria for the awards announcements.  A small room when filled with 100 or so pipers, drummers, parents, etc..  (33 (!) years ago, when I attended this school, I am certain the cafeteria was much larger.. well, I remember it that way)

Results are announced,  certificates are given to each of the winners, and judging sheets are handed out.

I hope you can see the very young and very small people in the  photo. This is quite typical. Competitors range in age from about 7 (?) to 60 (?).  But, I would guess the vast majority of competitors are in the 10-16 year old range.  Lots of fun to see.

OK.. Now, to the results:
