DUNCAN FRASER October 31, 1956 - July 1, 2025
Longtime piper, musician, leader and friend to so many sadly passed away on July 1, 2025 after a brief illness.
Duncan started his piping career with the White Spot Pipe Band as a young boy, graduating to the Triumph Street Pipe Band when he turned 18 in 1974. For many years, he was a stalwart member of the original Triumph Street Pipe Band, until the band's hiatus in the early 1990's.
He played successfully in the amateur competitive ranks, eventually moving into professional.
Duncan displayed enthusiastic leadership in the piping community. He was active in the Western Pipe Band Association (now defunct), helping to bring pipe band organization into the modern era. Once involved with the BC Pipers Association, he acted as the BCPA representative in the the decision to purchase the Scottish Cultural Centre, and was an effective advocate dealing with the other associations. Duncan served on the BCPA board of directors, became vice president and eventually President for a term in 1987. He also served a stint as editor of the BC Pipers' newsletter.
He will be remembered for the memorable sound of his instrument, his grandfather's old Henderson pipes. His love of music eventually drew him into banjo and small pipes -- following his retirement from Service Canada, Duncan could often be found in Mt. Vernon with Skye Richendrfer and others enjoying Scottish music to the finest.
But without a doubt the highlight of Duncan's life in bands was meeting Robyn Palmer, a piper in the Triumph Street Pipe Band at the time. He wisely married Robyn, the love of his life forever.
We will miss his humour and friendship. To Robyn, Colin, Rory, the grandchildren and extended family, our condolences.
