The Boney Music Memorial Invitational is an annual piping competition and recital, initiated in 2016 by B.C.P.A. Life Member, Andrew Bonar, featuring the top Open pipers in the BC Pipers’ Association Grand Aggregate standings. At Andrew’s request, the British Columbia Pipers’ Association continues this prestigious event and raises funds for brain cancer research with the B.C. Cancer Foundation.
The BC Pipers’ Association is pleased to be partnered with The Seaforth Highlanders of Canada to bring this event back to the Seaforth Armoury.
Event: Saturday, March 28, 2026
Venue: Anderson Room, Seaforth Armoury, 1650 Burrard Street, Vancouver, B.C.
Time: 7:00 pm start
Competitors: Cameron Bonar, Zephan Knichel, Craig Sutherland, Alastair Lee, and Callum Bevan.

2026 Music Requirements: 20 minute selection of players choice to include:
- At least two tunes written by Andrew Bonar, in different idioms, placed anywhere in the program
- The ground of a piobaireachd (traditional or contemporary)
- At least two two-parted strathspeys
- At least one four-parted march (any time signature)
- At least one tune in a compound or irregular time signature (e.g. 9/8, 12/8, 5/4, 7/8)
- At least one tune written by the competitor, or another Canadian composer, composed from any time period.
- “At least one tune played by the City of Victoria Pipe Band” as a special tribute the late James W. Troy.

The audience will enjoy a recital performance by Andrew’s family, daughter Kate Bonar, niece Lauren and nephew Evan Jamieson. The evening will be emceed by B.C.P.A. President, David Hilder starting at 7:00 pm. Audiences around the globe can enjoy the livestream and will have an opportunity to donate. The 2026 Boney Music Memorial Invitational Competition & Recital will be available on the B.C. Pipers’ YouTube channel following the event. Donations will be accepted in person and online. Our fundraising goal for the B.C. Cancer Foundation is $5000. There are two donation options in memory of Andrew.

“As a retired medical oncologist with 41 years of service to B.C. Cancer and personal experience managing glioblastoma (GBM) patients, I wish to encourage members and friends of BCPA to support the B.C. Cancer Foundation’s annual campaign to promote research in GBM treatment. In doing so, we remember Andrew Bonar’s commitment to the B.C. Pipers Association and Simon Fraser University Pipe Band. There is a huge unmet need to improve treatment of GBM. The only way forward is with laboratory and clinical research which, with sufficient resources, can be undertaken by staff at BC Cancer.

Parking is available both on site and street parking. Enter the parkade through the East gate from 1st. Once parked, go down the staircase at the northwest corner of the parkade, across the military parking lot to the doorway indicated by the arrow. From there we will have signage and Seaforth troops assisting and directing the way to the Anderson room. For anyone with accessibility needs, Seaforth troops can provide access through the Hoffmeister building, which has ramps and automatic doors.
